To be able to follow the (Day Skipper) course your existing skills should be on the Competent Crew and your theoretical knowledge on the Day Skipper Theory levels course at least.

Experience:
- Minimum 5 days aboard of a sailing yacht, 100 NM, 4 hours of night sailing

Practical skills (knowledge about and/or ability to do):
- Terminology - parts of the yacht, rigging and sails
- Hoisting, lowering, reefing and unreefing sails
- Sailing positions - close haul, beam reach, broad reach
- Sail trimm according to the sailing position
- Commands and manoeuvres - head up (luff up), bear away, tack, gybe
- Steering a straight course under sails and engine
- Ropes and knots - halyards, sheets, bowline knot, clove hitch, figure of eight, cleat hitch

Assumed theory knowledge:
- Navigation - latitude, longitude, magnetic variation
- Chartwork - symbols, lights, use of rulers and dividers
- Position fixing - three point fix, dead reckoning, estimated position
- Tides and tidal calculations
- Course to steer
- Weather forecasts
- Rules of avoiding collision

Please bear in mind that attending a sailing course requires basic levels of fitness and agility. Our highest demand is safety – to enable us to provide it we need you to inform us if you might have any medical condition or disability that could affect your ability to enjoy and successfully take part in one of our courses.

* After applying for the RYA course, you'll become a candidate for the RYA Certificate. Passing and getting the certificate are not guaranteed with the booking. There is a test at the end of the online theory courses. There's no test in the practical courses. Still, your pass depends on the instructor's assessment of your existing skills and knowledge and your progress during the course. If you don't achieve the skills and knowledge required for the certificate, the instructor will brief you and advise you on achieving your goal.
